Visiting Other Islands
Orcas Island is a great base for day trips to neighboring San Juan Islands. The inter-island ferry makes it easy to explore Lopez, Shaw, and San Juan (Friday Harbor).
Inter-island ferry basics
There are westbound and eastbound sailings. Plan to arrive 30–45 minutes before departure (45–60 minutes in summer) to get in line. Loading is first come, first served.
- Walk-on passengers: free on all inter-island sailings.
- Vehicles: westbound trips have a fare; eastbound trips are free.
Examples:
- Westbound fare applies: Lopez → Orcas, Lopez → Friday Harbor, Orcas → Friday Harbor.
- Eastbound is free (walk-on and vehicles): Friday Harbor → Lopez, Friday Harbor → Orcas, Orcas → Lopez.
Schedules change seasonally; confirm current departure times before you go.
Helpful tips
- Line up early during peak seasons and holidays.
- If bringing a vehicle, have your route and return time in mind before boarding.
- Walk-on is the quickest way to travel between islands; consider renting bikes or using local shuttles once ashore.
